After retiring from the Navy, he hated to leave the sea so he took a job on a commercial fishing boat. He contracted meningococcal meningitis aboard ship. Because of the high fever he began having hallucinations and became delirious. Those aboard ship thought he had lost his mind or was on drugs, so they tied him to his bunk for days before someone thought he should get to a hospital. He was finally brought to the hospital but by then it was much too late. He was brain dead. The doctors put him on life support until family could get to Alaska to sign papers to remove him from life support. The decision was made by his father. His heart was not only pure, it was also strong. He survived for two hours after life support was discontinued. He died one day before his daughters birthday.
