Joseph Kenneth Forbes, 88 died at his home surrounded by his family on July 11, 2013 following a period of declining health. Born in New Hampton August 9, 1924 he is the son of Joseph and Lillian (Paine) Forbes. He was raised in New Hampton where he attended a one room school and graduated from Ashland High School at the age of 15. In January 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Meredith DD434. He was on the Meredith until it was sunk, and then on the U.S.S. Iowa. Ken was a Purple Heart recipient.
After the war he returned to New Hampton and married Eleanor (Thurber) Forbes who predeceased him in 2009 after 60 years of marriage. In 1964 Ken moved his family to Ashland. He operated his contracted business for many years having built more than 60 fine homes in the area and restoring many others. He said if he had a chance to have his life all over he wouldn't change a thing. Ken also delivered Meals on Wheels for the Senior Center.
Survivors include one son, Stephen Forbes of Laconia; two daughters, Nancy Ward of Bridgewater and Janet Hiltz of Ashland; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Phyllis Bates.
Calling hours were Friday, July 5th at the Dupuis Funeral Home, 11 Hill Avenue in Ashland from noon to 3 p.m. A funeral service was held Saturday, July 6th at the Ashland Baptist Church on Main Street at 11 a.m. with burial at Green Grove Cemetery. >The Record Enterprise, July 6, 2013.
