Son of George W. Atherton b. 1792 and his wife Margaret b.1803. Born in Lewis. Grew up with George b.1824; Olive b.1832; Solomon b.1833; Andrew b.1835; Jane b.1837; Edwin b.1839.
Civil War Veteran. Served Company F of 178th (or 118th) New York Volunteer Infantry 1862-1863. Mustered Out due to Illness as a Corporeal. Returned to service in Company F of the 118th NYVI and finally released from service 13 June 1865 at Richmond, VA. Had married Angellette E. "Alice" "Lettie" E Rowe in 1888; and later Cordelia E Cooper(who later married Fletcher Avery). No children were noted on any census records.
