OBITUARY
JACOB M. WEBER
Died at Aurora, Ills., Friday, Oct 28, 1887. Deceased was born in Herkimer County, N. Y., Aug 5, 1814, and was 73 years of age. He came to Newport in May, 1855, moving from there to Kilbourn 1859. During his residence here he was held in the highest esteem by the entire community. When the Presbyterian church was organized at Newport in 1855 he was elected one of its first deacons, and the following year elected an elder, which latter position he filled until 1881, when he moved to Aurora, Ill. As a ruling elder in that church he was its most stanch supporter, laboring for its interest with a determined purpose and Christian zeal that overcame all obstacles. No man could have stood any higher in so worthy a cause, and few men ever hold a higher place in the estimation of a community than he did. He was a recognized leader in all church work, his example and influence being an inspiration and a stimulus to all others. He was a charter member and the first Worthy Master elected in the Columbia Lodge, A. M. For twelve or more years he was postmaster of the village. In all of his various duties he won the confidence, respect and regard of all with whom he came in contact.
The remains were brought to Kilbourn last Sunday, and in the afternoon the funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. A. Durrie. The church was filed to its utmost seating capacity, the Masonic lodge being in attendance in regalia. After the services the remains were escorted to the cemetery by Columbia lodge and friends of the family, the services at the grave being under the auspices of and according to rites of the Masons.
