Edward was born in Stockton, California and grew up in the San Joaquin area of California. His family was involved in farming and ranching. He left home in 1940 and joined the US Navy where he had a successful 28 year career as a mustang officer, retiring as a Lt. Commander in 1967. He subsequently worked for a credit reporting bureau in Monterey, California before retiring completely. He had three children by his first wife, Maxine. They were Patricia, Kenneth and Barbara.

Edward was cremated and his ashes spread at sea near San Pedro, California.
