Ethel Mae Pickett Clark, 94, died Thursday, July 21, 2005 in Pensacola, FL. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William (Bill) Besore Clark. Miss Ethel was born June 9, 1911, and raised in Huntingdon, the eldest of five siblings. She was the daughter of the late Harry F. and Gertrude (Warsing) Pickett. She attended Huntingdon High School, graduating with honors and a paid two-year tuition to Juniata College. She finished college after summers at Shippensburg Teacher's College, meeting her future husband, and Teachers' College Columbia in New York City, where she made friends at International House. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Clark was preceded in death by a daughter, Marcia Ann Clark Huffman and Marcia's husband, James. She is survived by a daughter, Connie Walker (Richard) of Pensacola, FL; and three grandsons, Michael Patrick Walker of Florida, Brian Clark Huffman (Linda) of DE, and William Scott Huffman of DE; a sister, Connie Oberlander of York; and sisters-in-law, Margaret A. Clark, Grace L. Clark, and Polly C. Pickett, all of PA; plus many nieces and nephews. Ethel's teaching career began in a one-room school in Big Valley, followed by years in Lemoyne, Selbyville, DE, and after a hiatus to raise two daughters, she retired as a High School Librarian in 1973 from Chambersburg. In school and after, she played the violin, piano and had a beautiful singing voice. As a teacher she coached a drama club. In retirement years, she pursued a lifelong interest, traveling to Western Europe, Japan, Australia, China and Hawaii. Ethel attended the Methodist Church in her youth and transferred by letter to the Presbyterian Church, Shippensburg, after her marriage. The family's summer home was Ocean City, MD, where they owned rental properties and enjoyed the Atlantic beaches from the 1930s to the 1980s. Twenty-two post retirement years were spent at Lafayette Plaza Apartments in York, where she had family and many friends. Graveside service Wednesday at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens, Rev. James S. Crawford of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, officiating. [Centre Daily]
