Daniel was a brother of Amer Jackson Bales. Amer left to fight in the Civil War and had asked if he were killed would his brother and his wife (Lavina Hiatt Beals) look after his wife, Matilda H. (Nolin) Quick Bales. Amer was killed and Daniel and Lavina took in their sister-in-law. Later, Lavina died. Sometime after her death, Daniel married his sister-in-law Matilda.
