Shirley A. (Holden) Helberg, 86, died Tuesday morning July 19, 2005, at her home, Spring Grove. She was the wife of Burton E. Helberg whom she married 63 years ago. Funeral Friday at Asbury United Methodist Church, York. Burial in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens, Reverend David McCullough from Asbury United Methodist Church officiating. Mrs. Helberg was born March 9, 1919, in Solvay, NY. She was the daughter of the late Isaac E. and Gladys (Tucker) Holden. With a degree from Johns Hopkins in Education and a Masters Degree from the Maryland Institute of Art, she taught grades one to eight in New York, New Jersey, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and Maryland. She is listed in outstanding Elementary Teachers (1974) and Marquis Who's Who (1993-1998). She was also the National Scholarship Chair for the National League of American Pen Women from 1976 to 1998. She had one-person art shows at the University of Virginia, 1974; Historical Society of York, 1977 Cayuga Museum of History and Art, Auburn, New York, 1974 and York College 1984. Shirley joined her chemical engineer husband, drafted in 1943, at a series of military bases. While he was doing research at Columbia University on the Manhattan project, she taught in New Jersey. The Manhattan Project developed the Atomic Bomb. They were then transferred to Oak Ridge, Tennessee where she initially was a military secretary and later taught at Oak Ridge. In addition to her husband Burton, Mrs. Helberg is survived by five children, Keir Helberg of London, England, Kristin Helberg of Baltimore, MD, Kecia Lau of Spring Grove, Kandace Meade of Martha's Vineyard, MA, and Kraig Helberg of Spring Grove; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
