Donald L. Hill, 81, of Charleston entered that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens, and embraced the open arms of the angels on July 26, 2005.

Don graduated from Charleston High School. He was a World War II Army veteran who served and fought for freedom in the Philippine Islands. Don was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon with Bronze Arrowhead and the Good Conduct Medal.

He retired from the Union Carbide South Charleston Plant in 1972. Brother Hill was a member of Charleston Masonic Lodge 168 for over fifty years, a member of Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, South Charleston Chapter 131 Order of the Eastern Star, Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem 7 and Tyrian Chapter 13 and a noble member of the Charleston Beni Kedem Shriners. He was also a supporting member of American Legion Post 0057.

Don was particularly dutiful in conducting military graveside rites for his fellow comrades. He honorably served as commander of VFW Elkana Post 8129 numerous times during the past 25 years and was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

Most importantly, Don was an exemplary father to his four children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ester and Able Hill of Charleston; 11 brothers and sisters; and beloved son-in-law, Michael L. "Mike" Englert.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 52 years, Julia E. Butler Hill at home; daughters, Becky Englert of Charleston and Bonnie Morrison and her husband, Richard, of Orlando, Fla.; sons, Kelsey Hill of Maryland and Carl Hill and his fiancée, Barbara Lekas of St. Albans; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Amanda.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 29, at Bartlett-Burdette-Cox Funeral Home with the Rev. George Bramble presiding. Masonic graveside rites will be conducted by AF&AM 168 and military graveside services will be conducted by VFW Post 8129 at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes, following the funeral.
