A resident of Waverly, IL; he enlisted on 8/9/1862 as a private; was mustered into Co. G, 101st Illinois Volunteer Infantry, on 9/2/1862. He served in some of the most active campaigns of the Civil War, and remained in the army until he was mustered out on 6/7/1865 at Bladensburg, MD (Absent at MO). He was with Gen. Sherman on the march from Atlanta to the sea and was on the gunboat Switzerland when Admiral Farragut's fleet ran the rebel blockade at Vicksburg.

On November 8, 1865, Mr. Coard was married to Miss Mary Eunice Knapp of Waverly. Mr. and Mrs. Coard had no children of their own. They adopted five children. Three of them were his deceased brother's children.
In a November 8, 1922, article about their wedding anniversary in the Jacksonville Daily Journal, the adopted children were listed as Mrs. Mary Radford of Trinidad, Colorado, Mrs. Alberta Hackley of Mesa, AZ, Mrs. Alta Kessler of Springfield, IL, and Louis Coard of Indianapolis, IN.
