Robert was born in Oak Park, Illinois and had an older brother, Clifford. They both joined the US Navy in 1941 and Robert became a Chief Aviation Machinists Mate. He was one of the few Navy enlisted pilots during World War II and was highly decorated. He was missing in action, presumed dead, on January 4, 1954 while participating in a patrol operation near North Korea. His body was never found. Only two of the ten crew-member bodies were recovered. He left behind a daughter, Cynthia, by his first marriage and two children, Linda and Robert, by his second marriage.
