The Permit sank one I Class submarine of 2200 tons, and damaged 1 freighter of 2,000 tons all by torpedo fire. In addition a 300 ton trawler was damaged by gunfire. Combat Insignia was awarded for this patrol. The Permit remained on station.....standing by to pick up downed aviators, from May 7, 1944 until June 1. On June 5, 1944, the Permit arrived in Majuro for fuel. USS Permit commenced her 13th war patrol with her departure from Majuro Atoll on June 30, and ended it with her
arrival at Brisbane, Australia on the 13th day of August, 1944.

Walter served on the USS Cusk SS-348 from December 5, 1946 until April 40, 1948. The Cusk departedNew London on April 24, 1946, and made an extended cruise
through the Caribbean Sea, and arrived at San Diego, June 6, 1946. She sailed to Alaska and northern waters between July 16, and August 20th, then carried out local
operations out of San Diego. In February 1948 the Cusk made submarine history and became the "Mother of all Boomers" when she successfully launched a guided missile called the "Loon" from her newly installed launch platform.
Walter was promoted to Chief Engine man on June 16, 1959.
Walter also served on the USS Pickerel SS-524, USS Caiman SS-323, USS Orion AS-18, USS Sirago SS-485, USS Baya SS-318, USS Tiru SS-416, USS Cabezon SS-334, and the USS Roy O Hale DER-336 during his career in the United States Navy.
Walter received the American Defense Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and American Theater Award, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Award, his 5th Good Conduct Award, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal, during his 30 years of service. Walter retired on July 1, 1969.
