Robert G Nichols, 88, of 24561 Cemetery Road, Spartansburg, died Tuesday, Aug 5, 1997, in Corry Memorial Hospital. Mr Nichols was born April 22, 1909, in Titusville, to Levi B and Martha Redmon (sic) [Redmond] Nichols. A dairy farmer, he was raised and educated in Spartansburg. Mr Nichols served with the Army as a young man and later during World War II. He married the former Florence Newton and she preceded him in death on July 22, 1985. He later married the former Mardell Lewis Graves on Feb 15, 1992, in Spartansburg; she survives. Mr Nichols had worked for Carpenter's Electric Co, Davey's Tree Trimming and for Northwest Electric, from which he retired. He also was a salesman for Lincoln Insurance Co. A Baptist minister, he was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Spartansburg. Mr Nichols is a former member of Spartansburg Council, the former Spartansburg School Board and Crawford County Planning Commission. He was the Republican committeeman for Spartansburg and a member and former president of the IBEW Local in Erie. Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs John (Ruth) Shenk of Lebanon, Pa; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Diane Nichols of Holland Patent, NY, and Gilbert and Kathi Nichols of Goshen, Ind; three step-daughters, Mary Kieffer of Waterford, Rhonda Capron of Union City and Susan Graves of Farrell; six step-sons, Brad Graves of Los Angeles, Harold Graves of Spartansburg, Mack Graves of Fayetteville, Ga, David Graves of Corry, Sam Graves of San Diego and Herb Graves of Erie; eight grandchildren; 23 step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and one nephew. Mr Nichols was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Coon, and a son, Gordon Nichols. Friends may call at...the Bracken Funeral Home in Spartansburg...where the funeral will be held Saturday at 1 pm. The Revs Richard Shenk of Mundeline, Ill, grandson of Mr Nichols, and William Matthews, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Spartansburg, will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Spartansburg.
