Louis was born in Quebec in 1828. He first came to the Flathead Reservation in 1859 and worked variously as gold miner, teamster, and rail splitter in Montana and California.
He married Julia Finley in 1861 in Fort Colville, Washington and the family homesteaded in Frenchtown, Montana.
In 1885 they moved to the Flathead Reservation where Louis became a prominent stockman near Ronan, and was adopted into the Tribe.
