Major Daniel C. Boggs, aged 96, died 11:30 a.m., at home of his daughter, Mrs. E. B. Weaver, 7404 Idlewild street. For many years oldest living veteran of Civil War in Pittsburgh and in spells of delirium that seized him during final illness he believed himself at head of old Fourth PA. Cavalry in its charge on Richmond. Son of Margaret McCloud Boggs and Robert Boggs born in Evans City, May 16, 1818, educated in public schools of Evans City. Engaged in lumber business. Was thirty when he married Miss Sarah Hamil of Evans City. July 1861 enlisted as private in Fourth Pa. Cav.... Lieut., captain... brevet major... 26 battles.... More than six feet tall.... Never received a wound in battle... typhoid fever.... Antietum, Gettysburg and Fredericksburg and march on Richmond. Stood within touching distance from Robert E. Lee when he surrendered at Appomatax Court House. Upon returning North, went to Titusville with family where he entered oil business, became prosperous. About thirty years ago heard call of West and went to Nebraska, where, for brief period, engaged in farming. Returned East, took up residence in Pittsburgh. About then became a widower. Several weeks ago went to Zanesville for national encampment of Union Veterans Legion. Told relatives upon return home he had had best time of life at reunion. Last Sunday attended services at Homewood Methodist Church.... Monday attacked by cold, day later pneumonia. From then on his thoughts were either on military activities in Europe, in which he was interested, or with his own soldier days. Leaves four sons, Daniel C. Boggs. of Indiana; O. P. Boggs, of Washington, J. F. Boggs and E. M. Boggs of Oklahoma; two daughters, Mrs. E. B. Weaver of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Cora Glassner of Tindyll, S.D., and 27 grandchildren. Uncle of Russell H. Boggs.... Probably he will be buried at Evans City Wednesday.... Union Veterans league will have charge.... Services at Weaver home on Idlewild street Tuesday night.
