Son of William and Harriet (Barnes) Haven.


Charles, a farmer, enlisted at Bolton, MA, in Company E, Massachusetts 21st Infantry Regiment on 23 Aug 1861 and mustered out on 21 Oct 1864.


Next he transferred to Company I, Massachusetts 36th Infantry Regiment on 21 Oct 1864 and was promoted to Corporal on 01 May 1865. He mustered out on 08 Jun 1865.


Finally he transferred to Company I, Massachusetts 56th Infantry Regiment on 08 Jun 1865 and mustered out on 12 Jul 1865 at Alexandria, VA.


From the "Fitchburg Sentinel," 14 Jan 1931, p. 3, in part:

C. R. Haven, Civil War Vet. Aged 90, Dead.

Charles R. Haven, 90 year old Grand Army veteran, who died yesterday in East Brookield, lived in this city for several years following the Civil war.

He was a stationary engineer at the old Wilson foundry before he moved from this city.

Mrs. Henry E. Cowdrey, a niece, is one of his two surviving relatives.

Born in Bolton, ... he moved to Eat Brookfield, when a young man. The funeral of the aged veteran, who saw four years of active service.... Burial will be in Hope cemetery, Worcester.


(Note: the MA index gives his place of death as Chelsea. It is possible he died at the Soldiers' Home there. per #46926975)
