Valentine Sublett Davis was born December 24, 1852 in Bedford County, Tennessee, the ninth child of Goodrum Davis and Henrietta Lee Smith Pryor.

Raised on a farm in a very large family, Valentine Davis had at least fourteen known siblings. Brothers; Archibald Swepson, William Lytle, John Louis, Abel "Ting", Robert Young, , Earnest, Goodrum, Job and sisters; Alabama Wade, Sarah Louisiana Marsh, Mary Margaret Smith and Jane Washington Lacy.

On November 18, 1873, Valentine was united in marriage to Clara Jane Smith. The couple had at least ten known children in their twenty-three years of marriage. Clara Davis preceded Valentine in death when she passed away in October of 1900.

Valentine Davis remarried in 1906 to Jannie Freeman in Bedford County, Tennesse. The two never had children together according to records.

On May 28, 1918, at the age of sixty-five, Valentine Davis passed away. His death certificate states "morphine over-dose" as possible contributor.

Valentine was survived by a very large family. Many children, grandchildren and siblings whom lived in Tennesse, Kentucky and other various states.
