George Washington was the oldest of Samuel and Mary Cockayne's children. He was named for his mother's father, George Washington Price.

George Washington Cockayne passed away Wednesday, November 10, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H.M. Downer, in Duncombe, Iowa. He was born in Jamestown, Va. on March 18, 1824. When eighteen years of age, he moved with his parents to Iowa, locating on a farm near Burlington. He was united in marriage to Miss Martha Jane Ping October 26, 1851. Eight children blessed this union, of whom seven survive to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father. The good wife passed away last March. The surviving children are Mrs. Harrison M. Downer, Duncombe, Iowa; Mrs. James Nichols, Morning Sun, Iowa; Mrs. Fred Hall, Cassadaga, New York; George B. Cockayne, Pierre, South Dakota; Mrs. Martha E. Nichols, Duncombe, Iowa; John B. Cockayne, Fort Dodge, Iowa; and Mrs. Clarence Raymond of Dubuque, Iowa.
