Attached to ""McCulloch's and Starke's Brigade, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The Unit saw action in Tennessee and Mississippi. In February, 1865, it was consolidated with the 6th Mississippi Cavalry; surrendered by Lt. Gen. Richard Taylor at Meridian, Mississippi on May 4, 1865.

William Andrew Mayes, the son of Edward Mayes and Ann "Nancy" Archibald, was a stone mason. He moved to Washington County before 1850 and to Bell County by 1854. With his wife, Mary Amanda White, to whom he was married on 16 Oct 1845, he had 13 children. She died in 1869, during childbirth with their youngest, Laura Amanda, who died four days later. They lived on Owl Creek.
William took his young son, William Walter Mayes (age 2), to his sister in Brady, McCulloch County, Texas, to raise. William A. died about a year later. He had remarried and the children walked to Bander and/or Uvalde County to live with relatives,
William is buried in Moffat Cemetery in an unmarked grave.
[William joined the Texas Troopers(Confederate) In 1863 at Willow Springs Post Office for a six months enlistment. He had two horses, one saddle and tack, two rifles, and one pistol with gear, This information comes from his registration enlistment card on file at the Texas Archives at the Zavala Library in Austin. Willow Springs was located about 12 miles from his home in Bland.]
