VERNON J. DANCER, 77, of New Egypt, PLUMSTED, died at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He was a self-employed horse trainer and driver. He was a member of the U.S. Trotting Association, Standard Breeders Association, and the N.J. Farm Bureau. He was recently nominated to the Harness Racing Hall of Fame, in which his brother, Stanley, is also a member. Born in Red Valley, he was a lifelong resident of New Egypt. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Helen Dancer, his wife, Carolyn Bell Dancer, his brothers, Charles and Harold Dancer. He is survived by two daughters, two sons, brother, Stanley; nine grandchildren. Vernon Dancer campaigned a large and powerful stable up and down the East Coast during harness racing's heyday in the 50s and 60s. He was responsible for the development of standouts such as Honeysuckle Rose and Tempered Yankee, and drove such stars as Cardigan Bay and Su Mac Lad for his brother, Hall of Famer Stanley Dancer. Dancer won over 1700 races before suffering a career-ending injury in the 70s.
