Martin served in the Civil War from 1861 until May 1865 when he returned home to Pike County. He married Eliza Ann in Pike County, Alabama on December 29, 1865. Martin and Eliza left Pike County after a skirmish with a ‘Yank' and moved to Florida. According to family records, 5 children were born to the couple. In 1874 Martin and the family headed west. He lost Eliza and 4 of the children to ‘swamp fever' somewhere in Arkansas - the exact date and location is unknown. According to his daughter, Rachel Browder Willis, who referred to her father as 'Mart', he buried them all in a common grave which he fenced with cypress wood. Martin then continued his journey to Texas with his surviving young daughter, Belle Matilda Browder, who was born Mar 18, 1872 in Milton, Florida.
