Obituary: Citizen-Press 30 Nov 2004

The Rev. Shugart Martin, 92, of Pulaski died Nov. 28, 2004, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home. His life was a sermon. The reverend was retired as a United Methodist minister of the Tennessee Conference. He was a graduate of Hiwassee College, Emory and Henry College and he received a bachelor of divinity and master of divinity from Vanderbilt University School of Divinity. He served churches in the Hiwassee and Addilynn Circuit, Elm Street, Gallatin First and Savannah First in the Tennessee Conference. He wrote the proposal, which was later adopted by the Tennessee Conference, to "find ways to implement the decision of the Supreme Court of the U.S. and to lead us in abolishing any inequities that exist between the races in each of our communities." The resolution did away with segregation by abolishing the Central Jurisdiction. Mr. Martins's Christ-like ways led him through the trenches to the heights of humanity, where his love for God and others knew no bounds. He loved preaching the gospel and being a pastor to everybody. As he dedicated his life to others, countless numbers were drawn to his shining spirit, beaming smile and outstretched arms of friendship. He was, indeed, greatly loved by all who knew this kind "little man" who stood tall of character, faith and love. He was a good and gentle man, a faithful servant whose life made a real difference. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Sarah Margaret Melton Martin. Funeral services will be held at noon, Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church with the Rev. Maurice Moore, the Rev. Linda Tidrow, the Rev. Thurman Tidrow, the Rev. John Anderson and the Rev. Bettye Lewis officiating. His body will lie in state from 11 a.m.-noon at the church. Burial will be in Pisgah U.M. Church Cemetery. Survivors include daughters, Janice McKinney of Pulaski and Judy Dale of Slidell, La.; daughter-in-law, Fran Martin of Lebanon; sister, Frances Cook of Nashville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
