Henry Devereaux Goodale, long prominent in the business life of Watertown, died about 11:30 Thursday morning at the family home, 247 Paddock street. Mr. Goodale suffered a heart attack Wednesday night and despite all the attending physicians, Drs. G.S. Farmer and Fred B. Smith, could do he passed away shortly before noon. He had been unconscious since about 1 o'clock Thursday morning.

News of the death of Mr. Goodale came as a great surprise in the city as it was not known that he was ill. Mr. Goodale had been confined to his home since Monday night, having been attacked by a slight cold at that time. His condition was not thought serious until the heart attack Wednesday night.

Henry D. Goodale was born in this city 60 years ago, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Goodale. He received his early education in the public schools of this city. In 1869 he began his business life entering the National Bank & Loan company of this city, where he remained until 1885, filling every post up to that of paying teller.

He then formed a partnership with C. M. Otis under the firm name of Otis & Goodale. Since 1899, when Mr. Otis retired, Mr. Goodale had continued the business dealing in fire insurance and real estate.

Mr. Goodale carried on for years an extensive real estate business and had heavy holdings in the city. He represented a number of fire insurance companies, principal of which was Aetna and the New Hampshire companies.

Mr. Goodale was perhaps best known in the city through his connection with the City park. While the donor of the magnificent park has never been announced, all of the transactions were carried on through Mr. Goodale. The land for the park was purchased through him, the park developed and the active management carried on by him. In whose hands the park management will now be placed is unknown.

Mr. Goodale was married on September 16, 1875, to Miss Fannie Waite, who survives him. Two daughters also survive, Mrs. Frank Massey and Miss Grace Goodale, both of this city. He also leaves a sister, Miss Mary Goodale of this city.
