Bloomfield, New Mexico Name
Around 1878, this city was named either for a resident or after local fields of wildflowers. The name changed briefly to Porter to honor a trading post operator before switching back to Bloomfield again. The Navajo name for the area means "where two wide valleys come together."
Prominent People in Bloomfield
Texas gunman Ike Stockton ran the notorious Stockton Gang out of Bloomfield in the 1880s. Accomplished cattle rustlers, gang members included second-in-command Harg Eskridge, Dyson Eskridge, Bert Wilkinson, and Port Stockton. While serving as Animas City marshal, the latter desperado shot a black barber to death for accidentally cutting him during his morning shave. Ike Stockton earned lasting infamy for tracking down one of his own gang members, Bert Wilkinson, and turning him in for a $4,000 reward. Wilkinson was subsequently tried and executed by hanging. Deputy Sheriff Jim Sullivan eventually cornered Ike Stockton and a gunfight ensued. Sullivan had better aim, firing a soft-nosed .45 caliber slug into Stockton's thigh, obliterating a segment of the outlaw's femoral artery. Stockton was spirited away to a secluded location where he could bleed to death without benefit of medical assistance.
