Mustered into Co. A of the 27th IL Infantry in his then hometown of Quincy IL as Frank Consteiner (the family name should be spelled "Kansteiner"). Corporal Consteiner was killed in the battle of Lookout Mountain TN.
His father, Johann Heinrich "Henry" Kansteiner, died of illness at Vicksburg MS while serving with Co. D of the 118th Illinois Volunteers and lies there in an unmarked grave. The elder Kansteiner's sacrifice to the Union is engraved in the Illinois Memorial on the Vicksburg Battlefield site.
Frank's older brother, also named John Henry Kansteiner (#104113998), enlisted in the US Army in 1860 and was a teamster. He was a veteran of Gettysburg and later served in the western territories, Nebraska and Utah. He retired to a horse ranch in Idaho in the 1880's. His last days were spent in the Soldiers & Sailors home in Quincy IL near where he is buried. John died in Cinncinati OH while "on a pass" to attend the 50th anniversary of the Gettysburg battle.
