During World War II, Sylvia joined the WACS (Women Army Corps Services) as an office clerk. After being honorably discharged she moved to New York where she met and married William Riley. She eventually divorced and returned to Puerto Rico to work for a radio station as a comical script writer. During these years she also founded the musical group "Las Damiselas", which at different times featured singers Ralph Dick and Rafael Nadal (despite its name.)
Sylvia Rexach was co-founder of The Puerto Rican Society of Women Authors, Composers and Music Editors. Her compositions have been recorded by several artists, such as Danny Rivera, Chucho Avellanet, Gilberto Monroig, Linda Ronstadt, Lucecita Benitez, and Ednita Nazario. She was posthumously inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame in 2001. A theater in San Juan was named after Sylvia, and there is a Sylvia Rexach Cafe Theater at the Performing Arts Center in San Juan.
