Notes: William R. Howland was a mariner. He moved to California and was baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1882 by D. S. Mills. He died of Bright's disease.

His mother was an Englishwoman who was the cousin of Capt. Warren Howland of New Bedford, Massachusetts. His father was from Portugal. He stowed away on Warren's ship when he was younger with his brother. The two seem to have been adopted by him.
