Actor. He was a prolific American actor during the silent film era, who is remembered as one of the first western film stars. From 1912 to 1925 he made at least 50 films. His career bloomed after switching from comedic roles to the increasingly popular western film genre. He attended Culver Military Academy and was a law student at Northwestern University when he turned to acting on the stage. He made his first film in 1912. During World War I, his acting career was halted while he served with the United States Army in France from 1917 to 1919 with the 33rd Division from Illinois. He formed his own production company, casting his wife Francelia Billington as his leading lady in 11 western melodramas, which were well-received by critics.
