An 1849 letter from Joseph Bryant of Grayson County, Virginia to Charles Bryant refers to Charles as "brother" and references the health of "Mother". Joseph was the son of Nicholas Bryant and Susannah Parker; other sources show that Susannah was indeed alive in 1849. Thus, Charles can be viewed as son of Nicholas and Susannah also.
Charles married in 1812 to Ann Adams. She is sometimes viewed as daughter of George Adams and his first wife Agatha Johnson. However, George and Agatha were married in 1797 and Ann who married Charles Bryant was born in 1793. George Adams, by his third wife, had a daughter named Ann in 1825. These pieces of information make it unlikely Ann who married Charles Bryant was George's daughter. I believe Ann who married Charles Bryant was the daughter of George's brother Moses Adams and his wife, Elizabeth Horn. An account of Moses and Elizabeth from the 1800's states that they had four daughters, but the account does not name them. Moses lived somewhat further west in present-day Yadkin County than the other members of the Adams family, and I have found evidence that most Adamses found west of highway 601 can generally connect back to Moses and Elizabeth.
Children of Charles and Ann Bryant were Moses M, Hugh, George, John "Jackie", Nancy who married David Marion Holcomb, and Elizabeth who married Mecans Casstevens. These names are confirmed by Charles' estate records .
After Ann's death Charles , in 1845, married Jemima Johnson Patterson, the widow of Greenberry Patterson. This Greenberry is not the older man of that name whose grave still is marked today, but rather a younger man born about 1798 and died about 1826. This Greenberry was probably the son of John Patterson and Edy Johnson, and his wife Jemima was probably the daughter of John Johnson and Jemima Patterson. After she remarried to Charles Bryant, three of Jemima's daughters married Charles' sons.
On the 1850 census, a girl named Rachel is living with Charles and Jemima. She is not listed as a legatee in Charles' 1851 estate, but is found with Jemima again in 1860. This Rachel later married James P. Money. Some regard Rachel as a child of Charles and Jemima; however , this Rachel was born about 1840; based off evidence, I do not believe she is their daughter. Another girl, Sarah Bryant , is found living with John and Elizabeth Adams in 1850. Like Rachel, there is no mention of her in the 1851 estate of Charles Bryant, but when John Adams dies in 1857, Rachel and Sarah are each given a grandchild's share in the estate ( or, a child's share jointly), and are referred to as "Heirs of Charles Bryant and legatees of John Adams".
Who were Sarah and Rachel Bryant? Moses M. Bryant, Charles' and Ann's son, married Margaret Jane Adams, John and Elizabeth's daughter. Moses and Margaret stuck around in Yadkin County long enough for Charles' 1851 estate to be settled, but were in Iowa by 1854. As their family grew in the 1840's and their home in NC began to be crowded, it appears they sent two daughters, Rachel and Sarah, to live with their grandparents, Rachel to the Bryants and Sarah to the Adamses, to act as servant girls. When the decision to move west was made, apparently Moses and Margaret did not bring Rachel and Sarah along. This evidently caused bad blood , enough so that Sarah and Rachel Bryant were given their parent's share of the John Adams estate despite the fact they Moses and Margaret were still living at the time, and enough so that Moses and Margaret were not even mentioned by name in the estate records.
When Charles Bryant first moved to Surry (Now Yadkin) County in the early 1800's, he originally owned land on Forbush Creek, which is where he became acquainted with the Adamses. He later moved to a large farm in the Starmount area. At the time of his death , there was no Mitchell's Chapel Church; the graveyard, originally known as Brindle's Graveyard, predates the church.
