Cris Sylvester died at his Baytown home at the age of 37 after battling pancreatic cancer for almost 2 years. Cris was born June 29, 1964, in Pasadena to Charles and Brenda Sylvester. He graduated from Sam Rayburn High School in 1982 and completed work on a bachelor's degree in labor studies from the George Meany Institute.
He began working as a commercial and industrial painter after high school and soon after became involved in the labor union as a representative on the executive board of IUPAT, Local 130. He also was a former business manager for the local and served as general organizer with the Building Trades Organizing Project in Las Vegas for almost 3 years. At his death, Cris was a general representative with IUPAT and a special trustee to Local 1008.
"The labor movement will remember Cris as a great organizer and teacher. Cris worked hard on behalf of his members and all workers," said Richard Shaw of the Harris County AFL-CIO. "Harris County's labor community will always remember his enthusiasm, humor and advocacy for working families."
Cris also worked in numerous political campaigns. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints.
Cris is survived by his wife, Sheila; daughter, Shelby, his parents, his brother, Davie Allen Sylvester; sisters, Tammy Ofczarzak and Michelle Hill; and grandparents, Charles and Vivian Sylvester and Percy and Willie Mae Lord.
