Captain S.M. FultonSummerfield, VA., April 10 - Captain S.M. Fulton, aged and highly respected and one of the largest farmers and most prominent citizens of Grayson county, died here at his residence, Summerfield, this morning at 11:30 o'clock. He was born here on May 26th, 1826, and lived here all his life. He gave liberally to the establishment and improvement of the public roads, schools and churches, and took a deep and prominent interest in all public roads, schools and churches, and took a deep and prominent interest in all public matters. On July 26th, 1860, he was appointed by Governor Letcher, of Virginia, as captain of riflemen in the 78th regiment of the 25th brigade and 5th division of the Virginia militia. He was a Confederate soldier.In 1866 he was elected sheriff of Grayson county, and served in that capacity for 10 consecutive years. In 1877, he was elected a member of the House of Delegates of Virginia from Grayson county, and while a member of that body distinguished himself as one of the ablest advocates of the readjustment of the State debt and the establishment of the public free schools. In 1880 he was appointed a State canvasser for the Readjuster-Democratic ticket, and canvassed the southwestern part of the State and advocated to the election of Hancock and English to the Presidency. In 1870 he was tendered and declined the nomination for State Senator from the district composed of the counties of Grayson, Carroll and Floyd. In 1882 he declined the nomination for Congress from the 5th Congressional District of Virginia on the Readjuster ticket. He married Mary C. Reid, of Campbell county, Va., on February 4th, 1855, and leaves her surviving him as his widow and the following children: S.M. Fulton Jr., Independence, Va; Mrs. M.V. Cox, wife of Captain M.B. Cox, Saddle, Va; Creed M. Fulton and W.G. Fulton, Washington, DC; J.K. Fulton, T.R. Fulton and Rev. W.C. Fulton, Summerfield, Va; Mrs. Creed F. Carter, Roxie, Va; and M.J. Fulton, Front Royal, Va.
