Dana Philip Schrider, 65, of Mount Airy, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, after suffering a massive heart attack at home. Born June 12, 1948, in Frederick, he was the son of Ernest Andrew Schrider and Gladys Grimes Schrider, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va. He was the husband of Suzanne Lorraine Schrider, his wife of 35 years. He grew up in Woodbine and was a 1966 graduate of Mount Airy High School. He enlisted in the Army and served his country in Germany and then the Vietnam War, being honorably discharged in 1971. He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing, The History Channel, "Antiques Roadshow," solving Sudoko puzzles, and Celebrity Cipher. In his younger days, he was a league bowler at Mount Airy Duckpins Lanes. He enjoyed watching the birds, squirrels and raccoons that visited his backyard bird feeders; and especially enjoyed the cats that made their home with them, Princess, Hobo and Mira. The couple had no children. Surviving, in addition to his parents and wife, are sister Elaine Susan Spertzel and husband Charles W.; a niece, Heather Gene Spahr; a nephew, Charles Nathan Spertzel; great-nieces Dakota Renee' Spahr and Raelyn Harmony Spahr; and uncles, aunts and cousins. He was predeceased by grandparents Charles Benjamin and Marguerite Schrider, and Francis and Hazel Grimes. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Wallace Lusk officiating. Interment will follow in Lake View Memorial Park in Sykesville.
