Capt Zebina H Chase,well-known
coasting master,died at Taunton early
Wednesday morning,after a long ill-
ness.Capt Chase had been one of the
most prominent coasting masters in
this section.He was born in Harwich,
June 30, 1820.He was the son of the late
Neri Chase and Sabra Smith, and began
his career as a mariner when but a mere
boy,sailing out of Harwich in fishing
vessels as a cook.At the age of 18 he
was in command of his first vessel,the
schooner Luther S Chase,which plied
between here and Cape Cod ports.
Later he removed to this city and began
running on the line between New Bed-
ford and New York. At one time he
had command of the schooner,E
Waterman,and after running in her for
a number of years he built the schooner
Hastings,one of the fastest vessels
which ever sailed out of New Bedford.
In her he made the record run to New
York for a sailing vessel,covering the
167 miles in a trifle over 13 hours.
Once he made a round trip between here
and New York,discharging and loading
at each port, in three days.Then he
built the schooner J G Dean.
Towards the later part of his career as
a coasting master he was engaged in the
fruit trade between New York and the
West Indies. In all he had put in more
than 60 years of his life at sea.He
leaves several grown up children,two
sons,well-known coasting masters.-
