Floyd O. "Bud" Newhouse, 95, of Poplar Grove, IL, died peacefully in the loving presence of his daughters, Gwen and Janet, in his home on Sunday morning, August 4, 2013. Floyd was born on the family homestead in rural Rock County, Wisconsin, the son of Charles L. and Gertrude (Williams) Newhouse on March 19, 1918. Floyd graduated from Clinton (WI) High School in 1936. He then worked for Bowman Dairy in Clinton, WI. He attended St. Olaf College at Northfield, MN, from 1939 to 1940. Bud married Shirley E. Olson on June 5, 1943, in Capron; Shirley preceded Bud in death on April 17, 2008, a few weeks short of their 65th anniversary. Floyd enlisted in the US Army proudly serving in Company D, 33rd Regiment, 1st Army, 3rd Armored Division-Spearhead. His service time extended from January 1941 until honorable discharge in September 1945. Bud's military honors included Purple Heart, four Bronze Battle Stars with the division, Battle of the Bulge commemorative and Army good conduct medals. Following the war, Bud became a partner of Hills Implement; owned and operated Newhouse Allis Chalmers Dealership. In 1958, he began employment with the Illinois Toll Highway Authority; he retired in 1983 after 25 years of service. Bud and Shirley enjoyed many lengthy trips throughout the United States and Canada following Bud's retirement. Bud was a member of the John Hugo Kaiser VFW Post 1461, American Legion Capron Post 205, Forty & Eight, an honor organization for veterans, by invitation only; Military Order of the Purple Heart. He enjoyed travels to Rosebud Indian Reservation in S.D.; restoring cars, trucks and tractors; and in his later years Bud enjoyed reading. Bud was a faithful member of Capron Lutheran Church.

Bud is loved and will be missed by his daughters, Gwen (Bruce) Jones of Poplar Grove, IL, Janet (Jack) Engelsen of Galva, IL; grandson, Kristian (Angela) Engelsen of South Bend, IN; an expected great grandchild; sister-in-law, Mary Olson; nephews, Keith (Jeannie) Anderson and Daniel Olson; other relatives and his church family and many friends.

Bud is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; grandson, Arik Engelsen; sister, Ruth (Bob) Anderson; brother-in-law, Eldon Olson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 10, 2013, in Capron Lutheran Church, with Rev. Jessica Harren, officiating. Cremation to follow the service with later burial in Long Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 9, 2013, in Buck-Wheeler-Hyland Funeral Home, 218 W. Hurlbut Ave., Belvidere, IL 61008. Memorials can be given in care of Capron Lutheran Church in Bud's name.
