He was born Nov. 9, 1935 in Forrest to Elmer Daniel and Blanche Olive Funkhouser Elbert. He was preceded in death by his parents. He married Rachel Irene Kamm on Aug. 16, 1958 in Washington. She survives.
Also surviving are his two sons, Dan Elbert and Dieter (Rachael) Elbert; two granddaughters, Rebecca and Katherine Elbert; three nieces and two nephews.
After graduating from Forrest High School, he received a bachelor of science in history from Illinois State University. He earned both a master's and doctoral degree in early American history from Indiana University. In 1976-1977, he attended Cooperstown graduate program in history museum studies.
He began his teaching career at Rose Polytechnic Institute, then moved to Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, where he taught history and museum studies for 30 years, from 1966-1990 and 1993-1999. In 1991 he accepted the role of Illinois state historian in Springfield and during that time also served as executive director of Illinois State Historical Society and executive editor of Illinois Historical Journal.
