Bruce Conrad Abercrombie, 72, of Charlotte, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Tuesday, June 3, 2003. A funeral service honoring his life will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the Hankins and Whittington Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Boulevard, with Reverend Doug Agnew officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be the grandsons and the grandson-in-law.
Mr. Abercrombie was born June 24, 1930 in Cramerton, NC, a son of the late Ralph McCall Abercrombie Sr. and Mamie Schenck Abercrombie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Rebecca Abercrombie and a son-in-law, Coley Lee Johnson. He graduated from Berryhill High School, received a degree in Police Science and Criminology from Central Piedmont Community College, and graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy. He participated in numerous advanced courses of training including the Southern Police Institute of the Georgia Institute of Government. Mr. Abercrombie joined the Mecklenburg County Police Department in 1953, rising to the rank of Chief of the department in 1980. He retired in 1987, but remained active as a licensed real estate broker until recently.
Mr. Abercrombie's activities included participation in the N.C. Association of Chiefs of Police, Police Executives Association of N.C., Lions Club of Coulwood, NC Retired Peace Officers Association, Kiwanis Club of Charlotte, Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center, and Christ United Methodist Church. He especially enjoyed his family, property management, golf, fishing and travel.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Maddox Abercrombie; son, Bruce L. Abercrombie and his wife, Linda of Charlotte; a daughter, Cynthia Johnson Agnew and her husband, Doug of Harrisburg, NC; eight grandchildren, Sarah A. Hall and her husband, Cecil, Joshua Abercrombie, Laura A. Rosen and her husband, Travis, Micah, Josiah, and Noah Abercrombie, Seth Coley Johnson and his wife, Julie, and Adrienne J. Erickson and her husband Lawrence II; great grandchildren, Brittney A. Hall and Payden and Mahalla Rosen; brothers, Ralph M. Abercrombie Jr. and his wife Joanne, Carroll F. Abercrombie and his wife, Jean; sisters, Louise A. Hunsucker and her husband, Charles, Carolyn A. Stewart and her husband, Albert, and Lavern A. Kiser and her husband, Bill; as well as many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
