John Henry Greer is one of 5 children born out an enslaved woman named Dinah and a slave owner, John Wilburn Greer. (Maria, born 1859; Cynthia, born 1860; John Henry, born 1861; Henrietta, born 1862; and Simeon, born 1863.)

At emancipation, Dinah Reagan married William (Billy) Johnson and gave birth to additional children.

Slave owner, John Wilburn Greer, born in 1806 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Marlin, Texas. . His father, Henry Greer, was born in Bedford, Virginia in 1769 and died in March 1849 on his plantation near Monroe, Mississippi. Henry Greer is credited as the inventor of the Mississippi Rifle, which became the official rifle of the confederacy.
