August was the son of Henry F. Bronger and Rosa Hillmeier. On 20 Apr 1908 he married Mattie Duffy (her third marriage) and they had one daughter, Mary. Mattie died in 1931 and about 1937 he married Annie Eschman Sauer. They had no children together. For many years he was a carpenter but at times he also ran a saloon and managed a garage. He was a retired detective at the Brown Hotel. August died of a heart attack at the age of 88.
