Margaret Mary Lassen FLORENCE, SC - Mrs. Margaret Mary Lassen (Peggy), a World War II Veteran, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2013, at the McLeod Hospice House in Florence, South Carolina. Peggy was born July 30, 1920, in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of Raymond Everett and Elizabeth (Betty) McNair Kratzer. She was united in marriage to Lorenz Wilhelm Lassen (Larry) on May 27, 1954, in Nevada when Larry was a young U.S. Air Force Officer. He preceded her in death on August 11, 2012. They were married for 58 loving years. Peggy received her Secretarial Degree from Stoneleigh College in Rye, New Hampshire, on June 24, 1940. Two years later, she volunteered to serve her country on Active Duty with the United States Coast Guard Women's Reserve (SPAR), from January 20, 1943, until November 20, 1945, attaining the rating at discharge of Chief Yeoman. She was among the first women to serve on Active Duty in the U.S. Coast Guard; basic training at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and active service at the Coast Guard Telecommunications Service (CGTS) in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Peggy was a member of the St. Paul's Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Virginia. She was a Red Cross Volunteer and loved to play bridge. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Lorenz Frederick Lassen and Amy Marie Lassen of Suffolk, VA, and Philip Raymond Lassen and Kevin Munn Lassen of Florence, SC; and five loving grandchildren, Drayton, Renee, Chandler, Laura, and Mary Mac. She will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery along with her husband and parents. -
