Adams, Joseph S. (1794-1885) born in Staffordshire, England; sergeant of the Fifth U.S. Infantry regiment; transferred from Fort Brady to Fort Dearborn in May 1833, arriving on the same vessel with [see] Reverend J. Porter; he and his wife are listed as charter members of the first Presbyterian church in June that year. When the troops moved on to Fort Howard late in December 1836, only Adams, Lt. L.T. Jamison and Maj. J. Plympton remained behind. As ordnance-sergeant of the post, Adams moved his family from the village into the fort and stayed until the end of May 1837, considering himself the last soldier [as opposed to officer; Jamison was the last officer] of Fort Dearborn and, retiring from the military to a claim in [Northfield Township], began to farm; with his wife Hannah had several children, among them a son Ralph, who married a daughter of Alderman [see] Bernard Ward, and a daughter who became the wife of Dr. Allen W. Gray; after his death on June 9, 1885, his widow lived in Evanston. Adams detailed his reminiscences of this period in a 1881 letter to John Wentworth. (From Early Chicago on-line)

Chicago Tribune June 10, 1885:
Joseph Adams, one of Chicago's early settlers and for 52 years a resident of Cook Co., died at his home in Evanston last evening. He was 89 years old. Mr. Adams was born in Derbyshire, England and came to this country in 1816. Shortly after his arrival he enlisted in the regular army. His regiment was ordered to Fort Snelling, Minn. During his service here he distinguished himself as a scout. It was here he married Miss Hannah Shadduck.(sic) She survives her husband. In 1833 Mr. Adams was transferred to Fort Dearborn where he served until the last payment was made to the Indians for the reservation, when he was honorably discharged. Eight children (sic) were born to Mr. and Mrs. Adams, six of whom are living.
