In 1927, he married Flora.

In 1928, he received a pension for his service.

From the "Fitchburg Sentinel," 12 Aug 1940, in part:
Herbert B. Allen, 68, of 36 Wachusett street, died yesterday morning at Burbank hospital.
He was born in Fitchburg and had resided here all his life.
He was employed as a locomotive engineer by the Boston & Maine railroad for 42 years and served as fireman for seven years prior to that time.
On May 6, 1898, Mr. Allen, then a sergeant in Co. B, 6th Regt. Inf., U. S. Army, left Fitchburg for Camp Dewey, Framingham.
He was named second lieutenant on May 7, 1898, and commissioned by Gov. Roger Wolcott.
Mr. Allen was honorably discharged June 21, 1899.
He was a charter member of Camp Guanica, U. S. W. V., and prominent in its activities.
He was also a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Engineers.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Flora A. (Kinsman) Allen; two stepsons, Herbert and George Progin of this city, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Walter Ferguson of Hartford, Conn. ...
Age 68 years.
