Winona Republican-Herald Dec. 13, 1922

Little more than a week after he and his wife had received congratulations on the observance of their sixty-eighth wedding anniversary, Alfred Stearns of St Charles died at his home this morning at the age of 93 years.

The end came at about 10 o'clock am and was due to the infirmities of old age. Although he had been very weak for several months, his mind was clear to the very last.

Surviving besides his widow are three children, Frank Stearns of Osage Ia., Mrs. Verne Cooke of Dubuque, Ia. and Mrs. A.C. Kauffman of Minneapolis, and two grandsons and five great-grand children.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the home. The masons will be in charge.

Mr. Stearns was on of Winona County's oldest pioneers, having migrated here from Canada in 1855. For many years he resided on a farm just west of St. Charles and later brought a home in the city, where he has lived since. He was one of the most prominent of the older residents of the city.
