Francis L. Beatriz, 78, of Mattapoisett, formerly of New Bedford died July 17, 2002 at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was the husband of the late Barbara A. (Mello) Beatriz, and son of the late Francis S. and Catherine C. (Weir) Beatriz.

Mr. Beatriz was born in New Bedford and had lived in New Bedford for most of his life.

He was formerly employed with the City of New Bedford Sanitation Department until his retirement.

During World War II, Mr. Beatriz served in the U.S. Navy Seabees and was the recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre medal with 3 bronze stars, the Philippine Liberation medal, the American Theatre medal and the World War II Victory medal. He was a member of American Legion Post One and Veterans of Foreign Wars Andrews-Dahill Post 1531 in New Bedford.

He enjoyed socializing in downtown New Bedford when he lived at the New Bedford Hotel Apartments. After the death of his wife, he enjoyed trips to Bermuda with his good friend John Pereira.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna S. Curcio and her husband Michael, of New Bedford; 2 sons, Daniel F. Beatriz and his wife Joann, of New Bedford, and Francis C. Beatriz and his wife Betsey, of Mattapoisett; and 4 grandchildren, Michael Beatriz, Jeffrey Beatriz, Elizabeth Beatriz and Andrew Perkins.

He was the father of the late David Beatriz, and grandfather of the late Susanne McGowen.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, Saturday, July 20th at 10 AM.

Interment St. Mary's Cemetery.
