Dale Zimmerman, 89, of rural Marseilles, died Tuesday afternoon, April 22, at Pleasant View Luther Home in Ottawa.


Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa with Elder Dean Martin of Ottawa Church of Christ, and the Rev. Kerwin Sletto officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park with full military services. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 on Saturday at the funeral home.


Mr. Zimmerman was born July 25, 1918 in Swea City, Iowa to Michael John and Anna Barbara (Mathy) Zimmerman. He married Lillian Grace Marsh on September 24, 1950 in Lewisburg, Tennessee. He was a lifelong farmer and retired from LOF on October 1, 1980 after 43 years of service. He attended Ottawa Church of Christ. He was a member of the LaSalle County Farm Bureau, a lifetime member of the VFW and an honorary life member of Local 19 United Glass and Ceramic Workers of North America.


He was an Army veteran of World War II. He received Five Bronze Battle Stars and one Silver Star in Field Artillery for Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland Ardennes Alsace and Central Europe Campaigns, the American Defense Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon European-African and Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon, three overseas service bars and one service stripe for good conduct. He was given the Special Diploma from the government of France for his contribution in the fight to liberate France from the Axis Powers in WWII.


He is survived by one daughter, Judy Ann Zimmerman of rural Marseilles; a sister, Irene Mae Fike of Ottawa.


He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lillian Grace on November 23, 2003 and one brother, Walter Raymond Zimmerman.


Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
