Austin Luke DeGiorgio, loving and compassionate son, brother, nephew, grandson, cousin and friend, passed away Monday, August 12th after a long and valiant battle against Leukemia.
From the moment Austin was born, his personality, sense of humor and sweetness simply radiated from him. He possessed an ideal combination of empathy, generosity, selflessness and fun. Austin made it absolutely impossible not to fall in love with him the moment you met him. It is rare to find a soul that was so wise yet so youthful.
As an 8th grader at Felix Festa Middle School at the time of his diagnosis, Austin was supported by not only the staff and his fellow classmates, but by an entire community who rallied behind him. Austin was so gracious for every act of kindness that was bestowed upon him. Despite the difficulties he faced, he was more concerned with how his illness affected others more than himself. Also, he made it a mission to help other sick children by giving them gifts, spending time with them, and helping them in anyway he could.
Austin loved to be surrounded by people. He would light up any room with his infectious smile, dancing and witty commentary. He loved history, traveling, reading, playing the guitar, classic rock and eighties music, his dogs (George & Lexi) as well as going paintballing with his friends. He enjoyed watching comedies, history shows, and the Walking Dead. He always followed his own heart and was a true individual. He influenced all those who came into contact with him, and there are no words that can describe how much he will be missed.
Austin is survived by his parents, Michelle and Neil; brothers Neil, Nicholas, Christian and Quentin; sister, Jennie; uncles, Vincent and Robert; aunts, Tina, Alana and Virginia; grandfathers, Vincent and Vito, grandmothers, Jean and Jennie; great-aunt, Patricia; cousins, James, Jake, Bobby, Luke and Paige; along with countless extended family and friends.
From the time that Austin was a little boy, he adopted the persona of batman. It was his nickname and he truly was a superhero to every person he touched. Any attempt to convey how much he was loved and how deeply heart broken we all are is simply not possible. Austin will never be forgotten and his legacy will forever live on.
Friends may call Friday 2-4 and 7-9pm at the Higgins Funeral Home 321 S. Main Street New City, NY 10956. A Mass of Christian burial will take place Saturday 10am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, West Nyack, NY. Burial to follow at Gethsemane Cemetery Rockland Lake, NY.
