The son of Isaac & Sarah (Hemperly) Ackerman, in 1850 he was living with his family in Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, but is not found in the 1860 census. He was a butcher, a trade learned from his father.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Middletown August 6, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. H, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863.
He married Ella Jane Parthemore April 12, 1866, in Middletown and fathered John Parthemore (b. 01/12/67 or 68), George Augustus (b. 11/12/69), and Ella Anna "Nellie" (b. 11/12/72).
