He had eight brothers and one sister, Mary Virginia, who married Howard Pet Jennings. She was the only sibling to survive him. For most of his life, he was a farmer. By 1874 Poet & Mr. Ubanks were tobacco dealers, advertising that they wanted 250 tons of tobacco for shipment to St. Louis.
In the 1890s Poet & Ed (perhaps Edwin) Bassett operated two tobacco barns in downtown Middle Grove. They raised tobacco themselves & were dealers as well, selling it in St. Louis when prices were right. During the busy season they employed about ten men to pack & ship the tobacco.
At one time, his tombstone was vandalized. Ruined. The marker has been lovingly and respectfully replaced by persons unknown.
