Actor, Comedian. Better known as "Diplo," he was born Arturo Ramón Máximo Ortiz del Rivero in Naguabo, Puerto Rico. He is considered today as the best actor/comedian in Puerto Rico's history. Through his character "Diplo," Ramón Rivero made Puerto Ricans laugh for over 30 years, at a crucial time in the history of the island country. Many still remember his character "Calderón" in his radio broadcast "El Tremendo Hotel." Diplo proved his humanity by defending victims of injustice during student revolts at the University of Puerto Rico. He led the first actors strike on the island, and was the first in Puerto Rico to promote a fundraising radio marathon. During World War II, Diplo took his troupe the "Farándula Bohemia" Panama and other countries with U.S. bases throughout Central America to entertain Puerto Rican soldiers in training. Besides his radio and theater career, Diplo produced the first comedy show on local TV, "La Taberna India." He wrote more than 3000 scripts for radio, theater, television and motion pictures, including ¿Por qué se ríe la gente? (What Makes People Laugh), and "El Album de la Radio," (1940-1948.) While in Cuba he filmed "Una Gallega en la Habana" with Nini Marshall. In Puerto Rico he played the lead in the motion picture "Los Peloteros," (the Baseball Players), and was working on a major motion picture with Rita Hayworth when he died of a congenital aneurism.
