George B. Abdill was the son of Archie B. and Vivian (Dodge) Abdill. He was educated in the public schools of Newberg and Dayton, OR.

He married Annette (Gibbons) DeDobbelare in Roseburg, OR 9 Dec 1955. They had three children: Michelle, Daniel and Karen. They divorced in 1973. He then married Joyce Ellen Ruff 15 Dec 1974 in Sunnyvale, CA.

He worked for 29 years with the Southern Pacific Railroad, most of those as a locomotive engineer. During World War II he served with the United States Army's 744th Railway Battalion (as an engineer) in France, Belgium, and Germany. While working for the Southern Pacific he published five books on railroad history. He also served as a director of the Douglas County Historical Society for many years and was the editor of the Society's quarterly publication, the "Umpqua Trapper". After retiring from the Southern Pacific, he was a driving force in establishing the Douglas County Museum in Roseburg, Oregon, becoming the first Director.
