The son of Andrew L. & Sophia (Hoover) Selvert, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 4" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Lancaster County September 27, 1861, and mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. K, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer February 9, 1864, at Chattanooga, Tennessee, re-mustered there February 12, and honorably discharged with his company July 12, 1865. His brothers David and George served in the same company, and brother Henry served with Co. I.

In 1890, he applied for his pension from Butler Township, Sanborn County, South Dakota, but by 1910 was living with his niece in Columbia, Lancaster County, where he died from "valvular disease of the heart."
